Jo didn’t want to go to this stupid function.

She wore a long black dress for the occasion and, as promised, it had a rather daring cutout in the back that exposed her scar in its entirety. Little strips of fabric held it together as it followed the scar from her shoulder to her hip, where it turned into a long slit in the skirt. She had to be careful to take small steps, or she would end up exposing a little too much.

Her hair had been piled on the top of her head, with a few delicate strands escaping, while her body had been stripped of hair everywhere else. They’d started to add a ton of makeup, but Adam had caught sight of it and snapped at them to keep her look natural before marching off.

Adam was in a bad mood, one that had lasted since Christopher’s visit. At least, it seemed that way. She barely caught sight of him anymore as he looked for ways to obtain as much funding as possible before the auction next month. The bidding would all be private, and if they ended up not making the highest offer, they would lose—both her and the money. Adam had explained the auctions were a little different than what she’d thought. The winning bidder would get the girl, but everyone would lose their bids. And the company would rake in the profits.

Well, at least he had to hold still for a while tonight. He had to escort her and Amber. A very unhappy Amber.

Poor Amber. Life had not gone the way she’d planned. All her preening herself on her tier one status only to discover she could now be sold to men who normally bought tier two or even tier three women. And perhaps worst of all, the Ancients had decided to boycott tier one sales for the foreseeable future, believing the city needed them and their resources more than they needed the people of the city. So tonight, they weren’t even going to meet the Ancients.

They were going to a ball for The People.

It would be heavily guarded, but every man who made the necessary downpayment on his bid could attend. They could talk to and dance with Jo and Amber to their heart’s content, and at the end of the night, Amber and Jo would be inspected in front of them all fully.

Well, at least Jo had already been naked in front of them all. She hoped that would help her get through it.

"Let’s go." Adam’s voice cracked like a whip, and Amber jumped beside her. They had been waiting as instructed by the door while he’d been gathering the necessary paperwork, and he now stood holding the door open, impatience etched into every muscle of his beautifully muscled body.

She sighed, letting her eyes run down him. God, he looked so good. His shoulders nearly spanned the width of the door as he stood in front of it, his strong arms crossing as she stared.
